Plastic vs Your Hormones

Long term exposure to plastic in food and water containers has raised concerns about potential health risks. Plastic is a chemical that is added to material to make them more flexible and durable. Some common plastic containers include phthalates and BPA (big words) These chemicals can leach from the containers into the food and water they come into contact with, leading to potential health implications.

Cooking; heat from the sun or microwaving etc.

Phthalates for example have been linked to endocrine disruption, reproductive issues and developmental problems. Studies suggested that exposure to phthalates may interfere with hormonal function and the reproductive system.

Additionally some research has indicated that certain phthalates may be associated with an increased risk of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

BPA is another plastic. It has been shown to mimic estrogen in the body, potentially disrupting the endocrine system and effectiveness of hormone levels. Research suggested that BPA exposure may be linked to reproductive disorders, developmental issues and increased risk of certain cancers.

It’s important to note that these potential health risks have been identified in scientific studies, the actual impact of long term exposure to plastics in food and water containers vary depending on factors such as the type of plastic, color of plastic, the duration of exposure, heat and individual susceptibility.

In short, to minimize potential health risk consider alternatives such as glass or stainless steel. Being mindful of storage will help reduce risk.

No heating up food in plastic containers or on plastic plates in the microwave

Aluminum foil is another biggy…

It’s important to note that evidence linking aluminum foil specifically to hormone disruption is not well established. The risks are related to acidic or high temperature foods. Being aware of aluminum leaching into foods may be helped by placing a protective barrier such as parchment paper between aluminum foil and foods.
